Stupid Arizona

stupid arizona, see that
worker
with that hammer
in his hand
he’s roofing your house
he’s painting your house
stupid arizona, hear that
worker
she's cleaning your house
or she’s taking care of your children
at the daycare
he’s doing the work
nobody wants to do
stupid arizona, remember
that worker
you picked up on the corner
and paid him so little
to do so much
after all he’s done for you
you make him a villain,
stupid arizona

The sad thing is that this poem would probably work if you took out Arizona and replaced it with just about any other name. In the UK we have a huge workforce of immigrant workers, especially Poles, who do a whole variety of menial tasks like farm work. For some reason we resent their presence but we don't want to do their jobs, not for what they're willing and content to accept.

I wonder who fills that role in Poland?

Jim,thanks for the comment. And yes of course the immigrant life is universal. But this poem is just a re-writing of a famous Chicano poem written in the 1960's. Read more here:http://a1gymnist2005.blogspot.com/2010/02/stupid-america-by-abelardo-delgado.html
